You don’t have to go far to enjoy it. It’s hard to beat a great cookout with friends or dinner on the patio, but you can use your outdoor oasis for a lot — including great entertaining. All it takes is a good projector and a few accessories, and you can turn your yard into your own drive-in theater for the perfect backyard movie night.
Below are some ideas and product recommendations to help you set up a movie night in your backyard. We’ve broken down our top projector and sound offerings based on whether you’ll need power, such as an extension cord or power outlet, or whether you want to rely on the built-in battery in the middle of the device. You can also grab cushions, pillows and a lawn chair or two to sit as much as you want around the display screen. Just don’t forget the popcorn, ice cream and other snack essentials.
For larger movies, you will need a projector. Any projector will work, but the brighter it is, the easier it will be to see the image. That’s especially important outdoors, or even on a dark night some ambient light – from your neighbors, your desk lamp or tiki torch – can ruin the image. Brightness also determines how large an image a projector can produce. The BenQ HT2050A is the best projector for the money, and one of the reasons is its crisp image.
To use this projector in the backyard, you will need to run a power cord. If you can’t do that or don’t want to bother, you’ll need a portable battery-powered projector.
We have no real advice here, but we do have a few tips for when you want.
Hard frame screens are more expensive and harder to assemble, but they are more wind resistant and usually have softer screens for a better picture.
The inflatable screen needs to be secured to the ground, and any wind is going to prevent it from swaying. However, they tend to be easier to set up and take down. Keep in mind that their fans are constantly running around, so in a small or enclosed yard, this can be annoying.
There are also endless DIY options; basically anything clear and colorless will work. It is important to know that you will be able to see any design on the surface, so the garage door or side of your house will not be good because you will see any design, seams or imperfections.
Finally, this is something that keeps me focused on living alone. Don’t underestimate the relaxing power of a good hammock. You can get one from Hammock Hut, Hammocks-R-Us, Put-Your-Butt-There – basically anyone will do. I have had one of these wind models for years and it has held up amazingly.
The problem with watching the movie in one is that you will fall asleep in the middle of the second act. There is nothing wrong with that.
