When it comes to building a PC, one of the most popular and best-supported laptop CPUs is Intel’s Core i5-4430M. Why? Because it supports the LGA 1150 socket – that’s the laptop socket that allows for the connection of an external GPU.The Question Can the CPU be connected to a laptop? is quite common.

Simply put, the best part of building a laptop-compatible PC is that you don’t have to sacrifice a connection to your graphics card for a CPU. But what’s the catch?

“The catch” is that your CPU will be using one of your laptop’s 3.4v power connectors, which is usually limited to around 30W. There’s nothing that says you can’t use a 6-pin PCI-e connector instead, which can work out a little cheaper (they’re basically the same connector after all), but they aren’t as future-proof as you’d hope.

Why get a laptop-compatible PC?

Aside from the power connection, there are a couple of other advantages to building a laptop-compatible PC. For instance, it’s much easier to install a compatible graphics card on a laptop than on a desktop PC. In the absence of a PC case, you can just pop the card directly in, since it won’t need any form of drilling or screwing.

You can also upgrade your CPU and GPU at any time. If, for example, you bought a flagship graphics card to play the latest games, you can easily upgrade it with a compatible CPU and then simply pop it back into your laptop.

Also, as we’ve seen, an external GPU is cheaper than an all-in-one solution.

Another perk to building a PC for laptops is that you can use any desktop motherboard you want. For example, you don’t have to use Intel or AMD solutions, or even use an expensive external case. There are plenty of third-party solutions out there that will suit all sorts of tastes and are typically a lot cheaper than using an all-in-one solution. Can the CPU be connected to a laptop?

Let’s use an Intel processor

And we’ve got ourselves a perfect scenario for building a laptop-compatible PC using an Intel processor.Can the CPU be connected to a laptop?

In our Intel Core i5-4430M review, we found it handled CPU-heavy tasks such as video editing and 1080p gaming with ease. As we’ll see in the steps below, it has a very high single-threaded CPU clock speed, meaning it won’t be able to take on the full power of a high-end desktop CPU, but it’s still more than capable of handling more than one or two tasks at a time.

If you’re planning on upgrading your PC on a regular basis, such as if you wanted to make your PC a little more powerful for a big game release, or wanted to play games on a 1080p monitor, then it’s advisable to opt for a quad-core processor.

Why not pick up an AMD CPU instead? Well, it’s worth noting that one of the biggest factors in laptop chipsets is power consumption. So the more power the GPU consumes, the more heat it will generate – which means that a quad-core chip will heat your laptop up quicker.

When we picked up the Intel Core i5-4430M, which runs at 2.20GHz and has a TDP of just 18W, it weighed in at a mere 0.91lbs (610g), which is incredibly lightweight for an Intel chip.

If you’re planning on upgrading your PC on a regular basis, such as if you wanted to play games on a 1080p monitor, then it’s advisable to opt for a quad-core processor

This was largely down to the fact that the processor was cooled using a low-noise heatsink design, which is essentially just a fan with an integrated heatsink. This kept the CPU temperature very low.

Similarly, the Asus laptop we used to conduct our benchmarks, the UX305UQ, can be powered using a laptop-compatible version of the AMD Ryzen 5 1400 processor. This processor has four cores with eight threads, operates at 3.5GHz, and has a TDP of 45W.

This means that the device had plenty of headroom to crank up the power to around 70W to keep the CPU in check.

But don’t think that you can build your laptop with a laptop-compatible chip and then run a desktop OS

However, the Asus did require an external power supply unit in order to run. A 6-pin power connector – the kind you’d usually find on an external graphics card – is used in place of the 5V/2A power connector needed by most laptops to draw power from the mains. I try to explain to you Can the CPU be connected to a laptop?

Keep your RAM at a minimum

RAM is a necessary component of any PC, and it’s something that’s really quick to get stuffed if it’s not kept at the right temperature.

Unfortunately, the Asus UX305 has 4GB of DDR4 Memory and a total capacity of 16GB. This is a relatively low amount of RAM for a laptop, so you’ll have to consider if you want to use the laptop’s RAM for anything else – such as keeping your programs installed – or whether the RAM is more useful elsewhere, such as as an upgrade for your main PC.

One way of getting around this is to configure a laptop with DDR3L memory and add the extra RAM as a secondary device, which allows you to put a much higher amount in. Alternatively, if you don’t need a whole lot of memory, you can spring for a cheaper laptop that doesn’t feature a dedicated graphics card and simply use that memory for programs that you don’t regularly use.
