Homework: A word that can cause despair not only in children, but also to parents and even teachers. And at least for elementary school children, maybe schools that set homework more difficult than their value.

There is evidence that homework can be useful in high school. This can be used to consolidate the material learned in class or to prepare for the exam.

However, it is unclear that homework is useful for children in elementary school (ages 5 to 11) or in the early years of education (ages 3 to 5).

What is homework for?

There is no guideline at this time about how much homework school homework in the UK that must be determined. In 2018 the Secretary of Education Damien Hinds stated that “We trust the teacher principal teacher to decide what their policies are about homework, and what happens if students do not do what is set”.

Although there is not much data available about how much elementary school homework conducted by students, the 2018 survey of around 1,000 parents found that primary students spent an average of 2.2 hours per week for homework.

Homework carried out by elementary school children can include reading, practicing spelling, or revising tests. The Charity the Education Endowment Foundation shows that the use for homework in elementary schools includes strengthening the skills learned by students in school, helping them prepare for tests and prepare them for school lessons in the future.

Homework can also act as a communication point between home and school, helping parents feel part of their children’s school.

However, the Parel of Obedted 2018 – who surveyed the view of about 1,000 parents in the UK about education problems – found that 36% of parents thought that homework did not help their elementary school children at all. The panel report found that, for many parents, homework is a significant source of stress and negatively affecting family life.

A little academic benefits

Not much academic research has been conducted on the impact of homework for children in elementary school. Available meta-study that combines and analyzes the findings of a number of studies-showing that homework has little or no positive benefit for academic achievement of elementary school age children. The main reason for this seems to be the inability of children to complete this homework without the support given by teachers and schools.

Some studies have suggested that primary students do not have independent learning skills to do homework, and that they cannot remain focused on work.

What’s more, homework may actually have a negative effect if parents set unrealistic expectations, apply pressure or use methods that are contrary to those used in schools.

Homework can also increase inequality between students. High -achieving backgrounds from economically special background may have greater parent support for homework, including more educated assistance, higher expectations and better regulation and resources.

However, it is possible that setting homework for elementary school children has benefits that cannot be easily measured, such as developing responsibilities and independent problem solving skills. It can also help children develop habits that will be useful in subsequent school life.
